How does the split expenses calculator work?

It adds up every shared expense, divides the total equally between everyone, and compares what each person paid with their share. People who paid more than their share are owed money; people who paid less owe it. It then pairs the largest debts with the largest credits so the group settles in the fewest transfers.

Example: Alex paid $210, Sam paid $80 and Jordan paid nothing. The total is $290, so each share is $96.67. Jordan sends Alex $96.67 and Sam sends Alex $16.67, and everyone is even.

    When is it useful?

Any time several people pay for shared things at different moments and want one clean settle-up at the end. It is most useful for trips and shared homes, where many small payments pile up and nobody wants to send money after every receipt.

    • Roommates: groceries, cleaning supplies and shared utilities that are not split at the source.
    • Trips and weekends away: accommodation, fuel, meals and tickets paid by different people.
    • Couples: shared costs. If incomes differ a lot, a split in proportion to income can feel fairer than 50/50.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I split expenses fairly between friends?

Add up all shared costs, divide by the number of people, and subtract each person's share from what they paid. Positive means they are owed money, negative means they owe. Debtors pay creditors the difference.

What if not everyone shared every expense?

This calculator splits every expense equally between everyone. Run a separate calculation for expenses that only some people shared, with just those people.

Can I split unequally, for example by income?

Not in this tool, which splits equally. For an income-based split, give each person a percentage based on their share of total income and multiply the total by it.
