Split the bill in WhatsApp with one message
Last updated · spending.chat editorial team · 2 min read
You paid at the restaurant, bought the gas on the trip, did the shared grocery run. Later, who owes whom either gets forgotten or turns into an argument. With spending.chat you text “dinner 90, split 3 ways”: your share goes into your spending, everyone else's into money owed to you.
How do you split a bill in WhatsApp?
Text what you paid and how many people shared it, or who with. The assistant splits the total equally, logs your share as an expense in the right category and records each other person's share as money they owe you.
- “dinner 90, split 3 ways” → your share $30 as an expense, $60 owed to you
- “gas 60, shared with Alex and Sam” → your share $20; Alex owes $20, Sam owes $20
- “who owes me” → everything owed to you, person by person
How are IOUs tracked?
Shares owed to you join the same list as your other debts and IOUs. Give a date and you get a reminder; when a friend pays, text “Alex paid” and the entry closes.
Months later, “did we ever settle that trip?” has a one-message answer. For the full picture, see the debt tracker.
Uneven shares and group trips
The assistant splits equally. If the shares differ (someone only had drinks, or one person counts for two), write each person's amount instead: “dinner 120; Alex owes 35, Sam owes 45”.
For a trip or a shared flat with lots of shared costs, our free split expenses calculator works out who pays whom with the fewest transfers.
How to avoid arguments over shared costs
Agree on the rule up front, log the expense on the spot and settle up quickly. When shared costs pile up for weeks, nobody remembers who paid what, and even small amounts cause friction.
- Agree first: split evenly, or everyone pays for their own?
- Whoever pays, logs it right away.
- Settle soon: at the end of the trip or the month, in one go.
Frequently asked questions
Do my friends need spending.chat too?
No. You record the split; your friends' shares are kept in your list of money owed to you. They don't need to sign up.
How does a split show up in my budget?
Only your share counts as spending; the others' shares are tracked separately as money owed to you, so your category reports show what you really spent.
When does it remind me about money I'm owed?
If you give a date, you get a reminder before it. Without a date, text 'who owes me' anytime to see the list.
Which plan includes bill splitting?
Bill splitting and IOU tracking are on both Starter and Pro.
