spending.chat features: an AI expense assistant in WhatsApp

Last updated · spending.chat editorial team · 4 min read

spending.chat is an AI assistant you text your spending to in WhatsApp, the way you'd text a friend. Beyond logging, it makes sense of your data: it finds the subscriptions you pay every month, tells you whether the same item got pricier, splits a shared bill, works out your profit when you buy something and sell it later, and flags it when your habits change. This page collects every feature with example messages.

Log expenses by chatting

Text “taxi 18”, “groceries 62” or “Netflix 15.49, pharmacy 23, coffee 4.50”. The assistant reads the amount, place and category from plain text and logs several expenses from one message.

It understands dates like “yesterday” or “last Friday” and any currency, showing totals in yours. On Pro you can also log with voice notes and receipt photos. More: WhatsApp expense tracker, receipt scanner.

Subscription detector

Text “what are my subscriptions” and the assistant finds the payments that repeat every month in your records (Netflix, Spotify, your phone plan, the gym), shows the monthly and yearly totals, and offers to add them as bills with a reminder before each payment.

Forgotten subscriptions are among the quietest money leaks. How it works, plus a cancellation checklist: subscription tracker.

Price memory

Ask “what do I usually pay for coffee?” or “did gas get more expensive?” and the assistant looks at your past entries for that item, telling you the typical price and how it changed over time.

Seeing how much your grocery run or fill-up really went up, in your own numbers, is the most reliable way to update your budget limits.

Spending by person

Ask “how much did Emma and I spend?” and the assistant finds every entry whose note mentions that name, with the total and the list of expenses.

Natural notes like “dessert with Emma 12” are enough; no tags needed.

Split the bill

Say “dinner 90, split 3 ways” or “shared it with Alex and Sam”. Your share is logged as an expense and the others' shares as money owed to you, which joins your debt list with optional reminders.

Details and examples: bill splitting. For a whole trip or a shared flat, try the split expenses calculator.

Buy and sell profit

Bought something and sold it later? Ask “how much did I make on the iPhone?” and the assistant matches the purchase with the sale and tells you the difference: bought for $700, sold for $950 = +$250.

Handy for anyone who resells phones, cars, furniture or collectibles. It's for personal tracking, not accounting or taxes.

Return and warranty memory

When you log a big purchase, the assistant keeps the return window and the warranty end date in mind. Months later, ask “when does my laptop warranty end?” and it tells you.

You still need the receipt or invoice for a return or warranty claim; the assistant remembers the dates, not the paperwork.

Weekly recap and habit alerts

Every Monday a short recap arrives in WhatsApp: the total, the top categories and what changed against the week before. Big habit changes are called out, like “you spent twice as much on cafés as last week”.

Catching drift mid-month makes it easy to correct. You can turn the weekly recap on or off anytime.

Net worth

Text something like “I have 10 grams of gold, 500 euros and 0.01 BTC” and the assistant saves your holdings. Ask “my net worth” and it values gold, currencies and crypto at current rates, adds bank and cash, subtracts debts and remaining installments, and adds what you're owed.

Holdings without an automatic market price, such as a home, a car, stocks or funds, count at the value you give. More: net worth tracker.

Budgets, bills, debts and installments

Set category limits and get a heads-up near them. Bills, money you owe and money owed to you are reminded before the due date; installment purchases are logged automatically each month.

More: budget app, bill reminders, debt tracker.

Reports, charts and the web panel

Ask for “October summary”, “food this month” or “draw a chart” and the answer arrives in the chat as a chart or table image. Get PDF, Excel and CSV reports (3 a day on Starter, 20 on Pro); on Pro you can also e-mail reports and see everything in the web panel.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to download an app?

No. spending.chat works in WhatsApp, so there's nothing to install. Pro also includes a web panel you open in a browser.

How does it find my subscriptions?

It looks for payments that repeat at a similar amount on a regular schedule in your records. When you ask, it lists them and offers to add them as bills; nothing is added without your yes.

Does it connect to my bank?

No. spending.chat never asks for bank logins or card numbers; it only records the expenses you type, say or photograph.

Which plan includes these features?

The subscription detector, price memory, spending by person, bill splitting, buy-and-sell profit, warranty memory, net worth and the weekly recap are on both plans. Voice notes, receipt reading, e-mailed reports and the web panel are Pro; Starter includes 100 assistant messages a day.
